On a November afternoon, we will gather for a sharing of the pot luck dinner is a banquet of burdens – a piece written by Hadiru Mahdi in response to the experience of participating in Weighty Matter(s) – at an allotment in London.

Hadiru’s response is composed of pieces of various sizes, mimicking the weights made with compost and remnants. Words pile onto the page with no central orientation. They move through the process of creation, rot, death feeding life, light, heat and darkness – always returning. The text holds traces of Weighty Matter(s) that took place at the height of summer and nutrients for its possible future iterations.

Weighty Matter(s) is a workshop developed for YDP’s inaugural summer festival, Bubbling. For the workshop, Yoojin and Savannah compost-dyed reclaimed fabrics to produce over 80 soft weights. Participants engaged with these compost- and debris-filled weights, exploring different forms of bearing, pressing and releasing, and attending to the embodied and relational effects that emerged.

After the sharing, we invite you to take part in returning the compost inside the weights to the heap, to the beds, to the earth. We will pour the compost into the compost heap or spread it on the beds. This is part of the cycle of the allotment – it replenishes the nutrients used during the growing season and opens up the soil structure for the future. As fellow growers say, it is like putting your garden to bed for the winter, with layers of compost as a warm blanket.
